The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) is a center of the University of Washington (UW) Department of Global Health (DGH), a division of the Schools of Medicine and Public Health. Formed in collaboration with its primary partner, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), I-TECH is focused on the mission of working with local partners to develop skilled health care workers and strong national health systems in resource-limited settings. Work is primarily supported through multiple federal awards, many of them targeting prevention, care, and treatment of HIV and other infectious diseases, with an annual budget that ranges between $50-85 million. I-TECH is headquartered at UW in Seattle and has offices in 11 of the 30 developing countries where it is invited to work by host governments. Approximately 600 staff work for I-TECH worldwide.
The objectives of the Clinical Mentor position are to support the decentralized delivery of HIV and TB care, treatment, and prevention; promote the application of classroom learning to clinical settings; and support continuous improvement in the quality of clinical care and patient outcomes at all relevant health facilities. Clinical Mentors strengthen the capacity of primary care providers to provide comprehensive and integrated care and build mentoring capacity for more experienced providers using on-site clinical collaboration, consultation and directed support.
Primary Responsibilities:
· Provide on-site clinical training and coaching primarily to medical officers on the management of HIV-positive patients and those with TB according to Namibian national guidelines, including adult and pediatric ART, PMTCT including EID, cervical cancer screening, and the prevention and treatment of TB, STIs and other OI;, and provide coaching in mentoring and facilitation skills for experienced providers.
· Provide training through clinical consultation, assisting local physicians to problem-solve and helping them in their patient care as needed.
· Assist in the development of standard operating procedures for the provision of quality clinical care.
· Promote, encourage, and assist mentees to conduct HIV-related operational research.
· Provide didactic HIV- and TB-related training sessions to health professionals according to established curricula and using various methodologies.
· Assist with the updating and revision of HIV-related training materials and national guidelines.
Requirements:
MD Degree with specialization in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases, or similar area. Must have at least 5 years of experience with clinical HIV care, including the provision of ART.
· At least 2 years’ experience with program planning, assessment and implementation.
· Experience in the provision of HIV clinical training and curriculum development.
· Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds and in an evolving policy environment.
· Willingness to travel to clinics and hospitals throughout Namibia
Desired:
· Previous experience in TB care and treatment
· Previous experience with international HIV work
Conditions of Employment:
This position is located in a remote area of Namibia with limited resources, based at a regional district hospital, with regular rotations to nearby local clinics. There will be quarterly travel to Windhoek or other regions for meetings.
