ABA ROLI is a non-profit program that implements legal reform programs in over 60 countries around the world. ABA ROLI has an annual budget of over $40 million andnearly 700 professional staff working abroad and in its Washington, D.C. office. ABA ROLI’s host country partners include judges, lawyers, bar associations, law schools, court administrators, legislatures, ministries of justice and a wide array of civil society organizations.
JOB SUMMARY: Women’s Rights Legal Internship
Interns for ABA ROLI will work with program staff of their assigned division to gain an understanding of international development programs and international rule of law issues.
The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is seeking full-time unpaid Women’s Rights Legal Interns for its Research and Assessments Office based in Washington, D.C. for the summer and fall 2015.
Although this is an unpaid position, interns at ABA ROLI are eligible for a wide variety of perks and learning opportunities including:
- Transportation reimbursement up to $12.00/day
- Field trips to D.C. legal destinations such as the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Supreme Court, and Library of Congress
- Brown-bag lunches with ABA ROLI staff and guest speakers
****RESPONSIBILITIES****
Typical responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:
- Work to support a variety of short- and long-term research projects related to women’s rights, gender equality, and trafficking in persons
- Assist with research on the following projects: an assessment of the status of women in Libya, a training module on access to justice and gender-based violence, a gender mainstreaming manual, and an investigation of global supply chains and human trafficking risks in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Research areas of interest
****QUALIFICATIONS****
- Current law student or recent J.D. or LL.M. graduate;
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills;
- Strong commitment to public interest law and/or human/women’s rights, as evidenced by relevant experience and coursework;
- Proficiency with MS Office;
- International development experience highly desirable but not required; knowledge of foreign languages a plus;
- Legal research interns should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable.
