Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP- Mainstreaming, Partnerships, and Outreach, Montreal, Canada internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 - 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Specific tasks may be designated in accordance with the incumbent's experiences, preferences and internship requirements, as well as taking into account potential synergies with academic work requirements.
Under the direct supervision of the (programme officers business and biodiversity), the intern will:
  • assist in the transcription and synthesis of meetings notes from the business and biodiversity forum taking place during COP 12 as well as assist in the compilation of the outcome report;
  • assist in the compilation and analysis of tools and mechanisms designed to help businesses integrate biodiversity concerns into their daily work;
  • assist with preparation for the national workshops to be undertaken in winter-spring 2014-15;
  • assist with the analysis of the effectiveness and utility of a variety of tools and mechanisms designed for businesses;
  • assist with work in areas of emerging importance for this file including Biotrade, Indicators for Commodities, and Procurement;
  • compile further tools, mechanisms and case studies that may be applicable to the business community and that could be placed on the Global Platform website;
  • maintain and improve the website, and ensure that other online communication tools are being used effectively.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Candidates should have a background in biological or environmental science, international economics and development, business, international relations, or similar academic qualifications. Studies in Multilateral Diplomacy and Sustainable Development desirable.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
