Job Summary
To provide an effective Geotechnical Engineering service to meet the operation’s production objectives.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements
  • BSc relevant degree plus Post Graduate Qualification in either rock mechanics or geotechnical engineering
  • 4 years post qualification experience, 2 years of which should be in a mining/mineral resources management
  • environment.

Key Activities
  • Recommends and incorporates cost saving initiatives into budgets and controls expenditure within approved parameters.
  • Implements and ensures adherence to set geotechnical standards, quality control and assurance systems for alignment of information management systems and technical processes to geotechnical code of practice.
  • Conducts pit audits to determine compliance to slope angles designs and recommends corrective action of deviation to production and planning personnel.
  • Develops, evaluates and prioritises geotechnical data acquisition schedule to optimise data acquisition for input into geotechnical models and slope designs.
  • Analyses and interprets geotechnical mapping, slope monitoring data and strength data and determines design parameters for slope angle design.
  • Analyses final wall blast evaluation data for slope stability monitoring purposes and blasting improvements initiatives.
  • Carries out integrated geotechnical models for slope angle design, slope stability analysis and mine planning, and updates models as and when required.
  • Plans and implements systematic Geotechnical Systems to ensure continuous and effective monitoring of the pit slopes.
  • Investigates and analyses slope failure incidents and recommends and ensures implementation of safety and production mitigation plans based on slope monitoring analysis results.
  • Carries out back analysis from failure reports to determine slope angle design parameters and validates existing models.
  • Manages and ensures implementation of slope angle design programmes.
  • Ensures implementation of slope angle design recommendations and monitors recommended slope angle performance.
  • Evaluates and carries out sensitivity slope stability analysis or slope angle optimisation based on hydrogeological and geotechnical parameters.
  • Evaluates pit risk assessments and develops slope failure hazard plan for each pit considering geotechnical conditions.
  • Plans and conducts slope failure evaluation simulations and ensures implementation of corrective actions arising from the slope failure evacuation report.
  • Collates and validates geotechnical data into databases, updates geotechnical design sections and plans.
  • Continually identifies opportunities for improvement in data acquisition, processing and storage by benchmarking and improving on solutions identified.
  • Identifies, coordinates and manages the implementation of and adherence to legal and corporate governance principles/requirements in area of responsibility.
  • Initiates, monitors and controls short term sectional projects to ensure attainment of desired results.
  • Implements safety, health and environmental programme in area of responsibility.
  • Implements the departmental talent management initiatives by ensuring the competence and effectiveness of manpower (capacity building) through developing and implementing career, localisation/succession, training and development plans.
  • Implements knowledge management principles through application of tools and methodologies to continuously improve and sustain business performance.
  • Identifies and implements creative and innovative ideas to continuously improve and sustain business performance.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all key stakeholders and partners to ensure achievement of business objectives.
