SENIOR SCIENTIST (ICP-MS AND ICP-OES) CONTRACT POSITION

The University of Botswana (Faculty of Science) is seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist to manage the Geochemistry Laboratory comprising several analytical equipments including an ICP-MS and ICP-OES which support research and training in the Faculty of Science. The Senior Scientist (Geochemist) in charge of the ICP-MS and ICP-OES will as well:  (i) Manage the geochemical characterization studies for mining clients, industrial sites, and regulatory agencies in Botswana; (ii) Design and implement laboratory-scale geochemistry studies in support of research in the University of Botswana; (iii) Manage and interpret data collected from projects covering a range of geochemical, hydrogeologic, hydrochemical and other earth-science-related research topics; (iv) Perform geochemical modeling, data analysis, and interpretation; (v) Determine project scope, develop budgets, establish schedules, approve invoices, and perform other project management duties required to ensure quality and profitability of the geochemistry laboratory; (vi) Produce high quality technical work on schedule and within budgets and mentor and motivated junior staff and (vii) Carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of the Department.

Requirements:  

The candidate should have (i) a Master’s Degree in Geochemistry/Geology or related fields; (ii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or related fields with at least a 2(i) pass/ GPA of at least 3.6; (iii) show evidence of engagement in research and service; (iv) 3years of progressive experience in geological, environmental and aqueous geochemistry; (v) experience in the use of ICP-MS and ICP-OES, and other analytical equipments common in Geochemical/Geological Laboratories. (vi) have a good and sustained record of research and publications with at least 6 publications, 4 of which are peer reviewed journal articles; (vii) lead and/or single author in at least 2 refereed journal articles or book chapters; (viii) applicants should demonstrate evidence of service; (ix) a relevant PhD and demonstration of effective academic leadership will be added advantages. The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of publications; clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, name(s) of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any.
