This global portfolio constitutes a substantial volume of UNOPS project delivery.

The United Nations Department of Field Support, Information and Communications Technology Division (UN DFS-ICTD) is responsible for the delivery of applications that satisfy the requirements of the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support (DPKO/DFS) missions as well as Special Political Missions (SPMs).
DFS has implemented a range of systems to address the principal requirements of peacekeeping operations and to support and enhance the processes DFS undertakes.

Umoja is the project approved by the General Assembly resolution 63/262 that aims at the transformation of the United Nations Secretariat by enabling high-quality, cost-effective service delivery to support the execution of evolving mandates everywhere the Organization operates. Umoja, which means 'unity' in Swahili, will unite the many support and administrative entities throughout the Secretariat, including in peace keeping and field missions, through re-designed and common processes for the management of all financial, human and physical resources; a single integrated information system; and training of staff.
UNOPS has been requested to assist in the implementation of this activity.
Functional Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Training Development Lead, the Technical Writer will perform the following:
- Compose complex technical documents including use cases, standard operating procedures, test cases, user guides, training materials, online help, process and project documentation, workflows, and special reports using single-source content creation and publishing framework.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams and technical staff to produce and manage documentation in support of enterprise systems projects and service delivery.
- Confer with the development lead and training team in the development of formats, graphics, and layout of publications.
- Ensure consistent use of guidelines and templates for standard documentation to ensure consistency of use and alignment with business needs.
- Other duties as required.
Impact of Results
The results of work of the Technical Writer impact directly on delivery of services that satisfy the requirements of the Department as well as the performance of these services implemented in the DFS/DPKO field missions and headquarters. It will also ensure proper processes and methodologies are followed and implemented according to the latest of the industry standards. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring activities for all global locations are in line with the overall business targets and UN policies, rules and regulations.
Competencies
Professionalism: Strong knowledge and understanding of theories, techniques and approaches relevant to technical writing, especially for writing SOPs, UAT cases, and training materials. Ability to engage in multiple projects and develop approaches to resolve a wide range of issues. Individual should be detail-oriented, creative, inquisitive, committed and self-motivated.
Planning and Organizing: Ability to organize, plan and implement work assignments, juggle competing demands and work under pressure of frequent and tight deadlines. Ability to deliver solutions for effective communications, documentation, and training a must.
Client Orientation: Ability to identify requirements and appropriate solutions in the area of technical writing and training; ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with clients.
Communications: Proven ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate effectively. Ability to prepare technical documentation in accordance with industry standards and best practices for UAT, training, and online help materials for use in a shared content repository.
Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Education
Secondary school education or equivalent technical school. First level university degree highly desirable.
Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience writing technical documentation for ICT projects of large size and scope. High level of expertise in single-source documentation using FrameMaker is a must. Experience writing UAT cases, training materials, and online help for large enterprise solutions is also required. Experience in human resource management and Captivate is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a second UN language is desirable
