LEGAL OFFICER, (TWO POSITIONS)
VACANCY NO. IRC 427
The Legal Officer reports to the Deputy Director, Legal Services and will:
(i) Ensure that agreements and contracts entered into by the University are sound and protect the interest of the University;
(ii) Provide timely legal advice and services to various committees, bodies and organs of the University;
(iii) Ensure that such committees, bodies and organs adhere to and comply with relevant legislative enactments and statutory requirements in their operations; and
(iv) Minimize litigation and legal challenges to activities of the University;
Duties: The successful candidate will be responsible for:
(i) The provision of legal advice and services to University committees, bodies and other organs as shall be required from time to time;
(ii) Provision of advice on the interpretation and application of the University General Conditions of Service and other regulatory instruments;
(iii) Draft and review contracts, agreements and leases between the University and other parties for the delivery of goods and/or services to the University;
(iv) Consult and liaise with faculties, departments, centres and other organs of the University on matters of a legal nature;
(v) Liaise with attorneys representing the University in litigation and other matters and
(vi) Review relevant legislation, statutes, rules and regulations of the University and make appropriate recommendations to the Director, Legal Services.
Requirements: Candidates should:
(i) Hold at least an LLB Degree;
(ii) Be enrolled as an Attorney of the Courts of Botswana and be entitled to practice as such; and
(iii) Posses interpersonal and communication skills, analytical thinking skills, and organizational and computer skills.
