The Cape Town HVTN Immunology Laboratory (CHIL; www.chil.org.za), a division of the Hutchinson Center Research Institute of South Africa (HCRISA), performs assays compliant with GCLP guidelines to analyze immune responses elicited to HIV vaccines in clinical trials. The laboratory is a new, state-of-the art facility located in the Gardens neighborhood of the Cape Town city bowl.
Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to provide data management support under the direction of the laboratory management.
Specific Responsibilities include:
Specimen and Assay Coordination
- Track specimen inventory for laboratory assays.
- Coordinate sample acquisition for all endpoint assays. Order specimens and manage the local specimen repository to ensure specimens arrive in a timely manner.
- Maintain the endpoint assay scheduling under the direction of the Laboratory Manager.
- Produce visual representations of assay timelines (e.g. Gantt charts) for laboratory management.
Data Coordination
- Monitor data collection and its adherence to clinical protocols.
- Enter data into appropriate databases and track review of data.
- Transfer reviewed data to statistical databases for analysis.
- Perform routine checks to ensure quality and completeness of the data submitted.
- Assist with the development, monitoring and review of Data Management SOPs
Laboratory IT support
- Oversee the CHIL IT infrastructure and maintain SOPs relevant to IT, in conjunction with IT providers.
- Track IT issues and liaise with IT support on a regular basis to facilitate communication between the local and Fred Hutch IT groups.
- Assist with minor IT issues when possible.
- Work with IT support to maintain the lab website.
Qualifications:
Essential requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Technology or equivalent diploma (Clinical Pathology, Haematology, Microbiology or Immunology) or BSc.
- At least 6 months practical experience in laboratory research; familiarity with immunologic research methods or terminology preferred
- Strong computer skills with experience in different programs (MS Office, graphic programs, database programs)
- Good communication skills and an interest in learning
- Ability to work in a team
- Good numeracy, literacy and organizational skills
- Strong time management skills
- Willingness to be flexible in working hours, including working some evenings and weekends if required.
- Must be able to legally work in the country of South Africa (without sponsorship).
