Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to perform laboratory technical work to identify and characterize immune responses induced in HIV-1 vaccine recipients under the direction of the Laboratory Training Manager and the Laboratory Director.
Specific Responsibilities include:
Laboratory Procedures
•Isolate, culture, and cryopreserve lymphocyte populations using sterile technique.
•Evaluate immune responses using techniques such as: ELISpot, ELISA, flow cytometry (intracellular cytokine staining, cellular phenotyping), multiplex bead array, and proliferation assays.
Quality Assurance
•Collect data and analyze in accordance with SOPs
•Operate and carry out basic maintenance and QC of laboratory equipment.
•Update, modify and write standard operating procedures (SOPs).
•Maintain records for experiments and quality control (QC) for the laboratory.
Laboratory operations
•Ensure accurate and timely reporting and record keeping.
•Order and maintain supplies.
•Share on-call duties with lab personnel to respond to equipment alarms off-hours.
•Maintain sample storage information in computerized laboratory information systems.
•Prepare and maintain reagents, stocks, and cultures necessary to perform the work.
•Package, ship, receive, and store biological specimens in accordance with SOPs and applicable regulations e.g. IATA
•Attend and participate in appropriate laboratory meetings.
•Participate in training of new laboratory staff.
•Contribute to the development of the laboratory environment (e.g. laboratory safety).
Qualifications:
Essential requirements
•A Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Technology (B Tech Clinical Pathology, Haematology, Microbiology or Immunology) or BSc
•At least 1 year experience in research or health services laboratories
•Computer literacy – including Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook
•Good communication skills and an interest in learning
•Technical skills: accurate pipetting, sterile technique
•Good understanding of quality assurance, quality control and good laboratory practice
•Ability to work in a team
•Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures
•Good numeracy, literacy and organizational skills
•Good interpersonal and time management skills.
•Willingness to be flexible in working hours, including working some evenings and weekends.
•Motivation and adaptability with a keen interest in the HIV vaccine field.
Additional desirable requirements:
•ELISA, ELISpot and/or Flow Cytometry experience
•Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell processing experience
