VACANCY: COURT PRESIDENT – D2, KASANE CUSTOMARY COURT (Closing 31/7/15)
REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT OF TRIBAL ADMINISTRATION
Applications are invited from suitably qualified Botswana citizens for Court President, D2 position tenable at Kasane Customary Court, Department of Tribal Administration.
Salary Scale: D2 P231, 708 – P255,828 per annum
Leave: 30 working days per annum
Benefits: i) Optional Contributory Medical Aid Schem (Government pays 50% and employee 50%)
ii) Contributory Pension Scheme (Government pays 15% and employee pay 5%)

Qualifications: Degree in Law, Human Resource Management and Public Administration or its equivalent
Experience:
- Must have a minimum of ten (10) years post – qualification experience of which two (2) years must have been served at D3 or related level.
- Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in Customary Court/legal system

Main purpose of the job:
To preside over criminal and civil cases within his/her jurisdiction in a Customary Courts.
Duties
- Presides over civil and criminal cases, reveals facts and findings of the cases to disputing parties, overseas the recording of cases, prepares a summary and pronounces judgment.
- Administers other authorized laws of Botswana like the Penal Code except for those exempted under section 13 of the Customary Court Act.
- Interprets customary law practices and procedures;
- Executes decrees, orders, warrants, processes or instructions of the Court of Appeal, High Court, Magistrates Courts, Customary Court of Appeal or higher customary court as may be required.
- Arbitrates out of court minor family disputes in an effort to reconcile disputing parties.
- Scrutinizes monthly returns and civil/criminal cases submitted and directs alterations or amendments thereof, signs and directs their dispatch to the relevant authorities.
