______________________________
The Department of Waste Management and Pollution Control (DWMPC) intends to harvest rainwater for purposes of flushing toilets within the office premises and refurbish an existing water fountain for growing fish. The project will be a model for similar projects nationally if successful.
1.0 Background
In Botswana and other arid or semi-arid countries in Southern Africa, water is increasingly becoming a scarce resource and planners are forced to consider options to utilize all sources of water that might be used economically, and effectively to promote further development.
Expansion of urban population and increased coverage of domestic water supply and sewerage give rise to greater quantities of municipal wastewater, as is the case with the City of Gaborone and other urban centres in the country. With the current emphasis on environmental Health, water conservation and pollution control; there is an increasing awareness of the need to utilize all sources of water not only safely but also beneficially.
Botswana, as a semi-arid country with scarce water resources need to consider this option of water re-use/recycling and incorporate it into its economic development planning and environmental management processes. This will represent an additional renewable and reliable source of water for various activities such as horticulture, aquaculture and irrigation of open spaces within homes and institutions.
