Disaster Management Officer - Botswana

Support Red Cross societies across Southern Africa to build their capacity in disaster preparedness, response and recovery operations.

This is a volunteer assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government initiative. Airfares, living allowances, accommodation, insurance and other support is provided through the program.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) acts before, during and after disasters and health emergencies to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people. Located in Botswana's capital of Gaborone, the Southern Africa National Society's regional office is committed to addressing preparedness capacity, needs assessment, community mobilisation and numerous life-saving operations in the event of such occurrences.

The Southern Africa office's Disaster Management Team requires capacity building support to better fulfil its role as first responder to major crises in the region.

A committed AVID volunteer is being sought to identify and analyse key issues related to the successful implementation of disaster response in the region, and help create a relevant project plan to address these issues and assist in the organisation's capacity development. The volunteer will provide support in training and data management, and may also advise on other areas including national policy development and the creation of community disaster preparedness committees.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• Experience in disaster preparedness and response
• Experience working as part of a team, with the ability to share knowledge and skills
• Qualifications in international development or related area
• Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
