Head of Translation Division : AU - African Union

The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa's rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a New Partnership Worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia. In seeking to attain this objective, the African Union intends to build its capacity to deliver, among others, the implementation of its organizational structure filling of vacant post.

The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the position of Head of Translation Division in the Conference Management and Publication.

Grade: P5

Supervisor: Director of Conference Management and Publication

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Major duties and responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Conference Management and Publication, the responsibilities and duties of the incumbent shall include the following

• Formulate and implement in close consultation with the Director appropriate policies and plans for the activities of the Division;
• Organise and coordinate the work of Revisers and Translators both regular and freelance;
• Develop a database of reputable translators in AU Member States;
• Assess revisers, translators and secretaries both regular and freelance and submit to the Director regular reports on the performance and efficiency of revisers, translators and secretaries;
• Assist the Director by advising on the acquisition of required translation tools software and reference books for the use of Revisers and translators, with the ultimate objective of having a proper reference unit and data base;
• Oversee the overall management of the Division: personnel, budget, performance, quality, discipline etc. in accordance with the prevailing rules and procedures.
• Perform any other duties that may be assigned to him/her, by the Director.

Qualifications and Experience Required

• Candidates must have at least University Masters Degree (in Languages, Economics, Law and Humanities) and a Higher Diploma in Translation from a recognised school of Translation.

Professional experience required

• Candidates must have at least 10 years experience as a translator and 3 years of relevant working experience in managing and coordinating translator, particularly at the international level.

• A good knowledge of a third AU working language would be an added advantage;

Language requirement

• Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages.
• Proficiency of one or several other working language(s) would be an added advantage.

Tenure of Appointment

The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months shall be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract shall be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

Remuneration

Indicative basic salary of US$ 45,551.00 (P5 Step 1) per annum plus other related entitlements-e.g.Post adjustment (46% of basic salary), Housing allowance($1 7,222.40per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc. for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
