ACHAP was established in 2000 as a country-led Public Private Partnership between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), The Merck Foundation (TMF), and the Government of Botswana (GoB). It has supported the GoB in delivering national HIV treatment and prevention programmes with remarkable success. ACHAP has now transitioned into an independent not-for-profit organization. In preparation for implementation of new projects awarded the organization, ACHAP seeks to recruit suitably
qualified and highly motivated individuals with strong commitment to Health and HIV/AIDS programme implementation to the positions of:
1. Programme Officers
Job purpose:
The purpose of this role is to provide support in planning and implementation of Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) project activities and other ACHAP Supported programs at hub and district levels with a focus on ensuring high quality and safe VMMC services, scaling up demand creation interventions and ensuring effective and timely implementation of ACHAP supported activities.
Roles and responsibilities
• Provides support to District Health Management Teams (DHMT) in the development and implementation of annual and quarterly VMMC plans and plans for other ACHAP Supported activities
• Works very closely with the DHMTs and the district task forces to develop quarterly operational plans for implementing VMMC services at district level • Provides programmatic and technical assistance in the development and implementation of innovative demand creation interventions for the promotion of VMMC demand in the district
• Facilitates the timely procurement and distribution of VMMC supplies and logistics to VMMC sites for VMMC services
• Ensures adherence to WHO, CDC/PEPFAR and Botswana Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures by the VMMC teams
• Ensures adherence to WHO, CDC/PEPFAR and Botswana Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures for VMMC mobilization at community level by the VMMC teams
• Facilitates the identification and training of community mobilizers, peer mobilizers and VMMC Champions, Community Based Organizations (CBO) and other individuals to support demand creation activities at community level and monitors their performance weekly.
• Provides programmatic guidance on the implementation of VMMC static, and mobile outreaches at clinic and community levels
• Provides leadership in the monitoring and timely response to any adverse events and reports these to the Project Manager in a timely manner
• Coordinates the collection, collation and sharing of district level VMMC data • Coordinates and provides logistical support to VMMC teams in the district to ensure effective implementation of static and outreach VMMC services • Ensures adequate stocks of SMC Information, Education, Communication materials (IEC) are available at the district level and coordinates their distribution to potential clients, facilities and mobilisers
• Documents best practices in demand creation for VMMC and shares these with CBOs and other ACHAP supported teams
• Conducts site visits to VMMC sites within the district and provides onsite guidance on logistics, clients’ recruitment, post operation review and reporting of adverse events
• Assists the DHMT to identify technical assistance needs of the implementing partners and in collaboration with the Project Manager and ACHAP central team addresses the identified needs
• Prepares and submits quarterly programme reports to the Project Manager and ACHAP
Qualifications and experience
• Degree level or its equivalent in health or social science field • Three (3) years in implementing HIV prevention, testing and community mobilisation programmes

2. Assistant Programme Officers
Job purpose:
To provide assistance to the Programme Officer in the implementation of VMMC programme activities at district level with a focus on scaling up demand creation interventions and logistical support to ensure effective and timely implementation of ACHAP supported VMMC activities. Roles and responsibilities
• Provides overall administrative and logistical support to the VMMC teams and Community mobilizers
• Assists in the coordination and provision of logistical support to VMMC teams in the district to ensure effective implementation of static and outreach VMMC services • Coordinates day to day operations of community mobilisers to ensure effective VMMC demand creation
• Coordinates the referral of HIV negative clients from HIV counselling and testing centers to the VMMC services
• Ensures that all HIV positive clients are linked to care, treatment and support services • Ensures a robust adverse event monitoring and response mechanism for all VMMC clients • Assists the Program officer with the development and implementation of demand creation interventions for the promotion of Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision demand in the district • Prepares and submits weekly demand creation reports to the Programme Officer • Works closely with mobilisers and District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) Health Education Officers to create demand
• Assists in the distribution of Information Education and Communication Material (IEC) and mounting of VMMC IEC materials at strategic points in the catchment areas
Qualifications and experience
• A diploma level or its equivalent in health or social science field • At least one (1) year work experience in any field
• At least three (3) years driving experience with no endorsements Knowledge, skills and attributes
The incumbent must have knowledge in the following areas:
• Training ,HIV and AIDS and Administration
• Very good communications skills, computer skills, and counselling skills • Ability to develop project plans, actively monitors project status and ensures projects are completed to time, cost and quality specifications
3. Data Clerks
Job purpose:
The data clerk will be responsible for collecting, collating and reviewing programmatic data from VMMC sites and other ACHAP supported programs at district and operational area level. The incumbent will also conduct data quality checks to ensure accuracy and completeness of all data recorded and submits weekly, monthly and quarterly data to the Project Manager and ACHAP’s M&E department.
Roles and responsibilities
• Locates and gathers information on male circumcision and other project activities • Cleans and organizes data in preparation for analysis
• Collaborates with MC and operational area teams to analyze and interpret information on male circumcision
• Works with the VMMC and operational area to compile and submit weekly reports • Participates in conducting on-site data verification(OSDV) and routine data quality assessments (RDQA)
• To update and maintain information on computer systems and in archives • To ensure that information in these systems is accurate, up to date and useable
Qualifications and experience
• BGSCE
• 1 year in data capturing environment
• Experience working in a health care setting is strongly preferred Knowledge, skills and attributes
• Understanding of importance of quality and timely data
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
• Good typing and data entry speed
• Ability to work well with others in a team
• Sets high standards for quality and consistently achieves project goals 4.
4. Driver/Messengers
Job purpose:
To provide transport for staff, VMMC clients and visitors to and from destinations in a comfortable, safe and efficient manner.
Roles and responsibilities
• Transporting VMMC clients from schools, homes and any other place of assembly to circumcision sites and dropping them off at their homes after circumcision
• Transporting Mobilisers and VMMC staff
• Transporting VMMC supplies and equipment as and when necessary
• Facilitating vehicle transport to and from facilities for scheduled maintenance, professional washing and detail work when needed
• Carrying out regular checks on vehicles to ensure cleanliness and road worthiness including licensing the vehicles
Qualifications and experience
• BGSCE
• Valid driver’s license a PSV license would an added advantage
• Two years regular driving
• At least three years old clean driver’s license.
• Some mechanical knowledge is an added advantage.
Attributes and skills
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Reliability
• Good grooming and personal hygiene with clean and proper dress • Calm, rational behaviour and attitude, and the ability to maintain composure under stressful driving conditions
• Must be mannerly and courteous in all driving and non-driving situations while on the job
5. VMMC Doctors
Job purpose:
The doctor will be responsible for providing VMMC services and contribute to the achievement of ACHAP VMMC targets.
Roles and responsibilities:
• Conducts high quality voluntary male circumcisions at the facility and at outreach stations
• Ensure adequate client education and follow up of VMMC clients for post-operative care to minimize possibility of adverse events occurring
• Provides 24 hour adverse event monitoring and response support to all VMMC clients
• Participates in and supports one-on-one counseling services for males desiring to be circumcised and provides the required pre- and post circumcision information that will help clients make the necessary decisions and adopt key behaviors that reduce risk for HIV, STIs, tetanus or other infections
• Participates in the review and development of monitoring and evaluation tools for assessing programme performance
• Works with the health facility/site/­­district team to organize and conduct group educational sessions on safe male circumcision in order to promote demand for VMMC services
• Together with the VMMC, DHMT and Hub teams, prepares monthly, quarterly and annual reports on male circumcision services provided
• Provides technical support towards the development and production of IEC materials and messages to support VMMC plan implementation in collaboration with relevant partners
• Participates in community mobilization activities to create demand for VMMC services
• Ensures that all VMMC clients or their guardians have consented to the surgical procedure Qualifications and experience
• Minimum of a Bachelor’ of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree
• At least 5 years clinical/surgical practice in a health facility environment
• Registration with the Botswana Health Professionals Council
• Training in the provision of VMMC services is a must
Knowledge, skills and attributes
• Infection control measures in the health care setting
• Thorough knowledge of VMMC surgical procedures in the operation/procedure room
• Attention to detail, Botho, Initiative
• Must be a team player and a mentor for other health care workers in the VMMC team
• Ability to withstand work for long hours
Availability and hours of work:
• Must be flexible and available, weekends, holidays and overtime
• Should be available to be called at short notice
• Work schedule will vary based on the needs of the program
• On call arrangement
6. VMMC Nurses
Job purpose
Will be responsible for assisting the Doctor to carry out Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision and manage the surgical procedures.
Roles and responsibilities
• Assists the doctor during the VMMC procedure, and actively participates in implementation of models of optimizing volumes and efficiencies (MOVE)
• Suturing following the VMMC procedure
• Ensures safety for all in the procedure/operating room
• Carry out pre-circumcision preparations and make sure that the operation room is ready for the operation and the required equipment is in good condition, functioning properly and is sterilized • Supervises booking of clients for VMMC to ensure correct registration, consenting and follow up of clients is done
• Provides counselling for HIV testing and VMMC acceptance, and answers client questions regarding the VMMC procedure
• Organizes and prepares schedules for outreach services
• Assist in data compilation for reporting to DHMT and MOH as advised by the supervisor
• Participates in the development of the VMMC operational plan for the district • Participates in door-to-door community mobilization for demand creation
Qualifications and experience
• Degree/Diploma in General Nursing or BNS
• Midwifery or some surgical experience that includes suturing
• Minimum of four (4) years post qualification as a registered nurse • Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Botswana • Theatre and counseling skills will be an added advantage
• Experience as a theatre nurse will be a PLUS
Knowledge, skills and attributes
• Infection control measures in the health care setting
• Thorough knowledge of nursing practices in the operation/procedure room • Ability to stand and work for long hours
• Attention to detail, Botho, Initiative

7. Health Care Auxiliaries
Job purpose
The purpose of the role is to assist the medical officers to carry out circumcisions. Roles and responsibilities
• Carries out pre-circumcision preparation including cleaning, sterilization of equipment and ensuring supplies are in place
• Prepares clients for circumcision
• Assists the medical officers during circumcision including dressing the wounds • Carries out regular checks on the wound including changing wound dressing • Participates in door-to-door community mobilization for demand creation
Qualifications and experience
• BGSCE and Certificate in Health Care Auxiliary
• 1 year post qualification as Health Care Auxiliary
Knowledge, skills and attributes
• Infection control procedures in the health care setting
• Basic nursing skills
• Attention to detail, Botho, Initiative
8. Lay Counsellors
Job purpose
The lay counselor will be responsible for assisting potential voluntary medical male circumcision clients to make appropriate choices regarding HIV testing and circumcision.
Roles and responsibilities
• Receives potential voluntary medical male circumcision clients and educates them on VMMC as an HIV prevention strategy
• Provides pre-HIV group counseling to the clients in order to assist them to make suitable decisions
• Provides one-on-one VMMC Counselling to prospective VMMC clients • Performs HIV counselling and testing procedure and communicates results to the clients • Provides post-test counseling to clients
• Provides pre-circumcision counseling to those found HIV negative and motivates them for VMMC • Keeps records of counseling provided
• Books clients for circumcision; and follow up
• Participates in demand creation through door-to-door community mobilization • Provides family education on benefits of VMMC
• Provides family education on wound care for VMMC clients
• Acts as liaison between the facility and the mobilisers Qualifications and experience
• BGSCE and Certificate in Counseling
• 2 years in HIV counseling
• Experience in HIV/AIDS counselling
• Knowledge, skills and attributes
• Counselling principles
• Basic training in HIV/AIDS
• Knowledge on limitations of a counselor
9. Cleaners
Job purpose
The purpose of the role is to maintain a clean environment and provides cleaning services for the VMMC sites.
Roles and responsibilities
• Provides cleaning services for the VMMC sites; both the procedure rooms and the internal/ immediate surroundings
• Prepares the procedure rooms for circumcision
• Guides clients accordingly i.e. giving directions to VMMC Clients • Mobilize men and boys for VMMC
• General housekeeping of the facility
Qualifications and experience
• BGSCE
• Six months post qualification as cleaner
