Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP Division of Environmental Law and Conventions (DELC) internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Governance Subprogramme Coordinator, at the Division of Environmental Law and Conventions, the intern will:
- Carry out research on selected environmental law and governance issues, including data collection and analysis of current trends and situation analysis in specific countries/sectors, in particular in the areas covered by the UNEP current programme of work, and presentation in written form of these data and related analysis for inclusion into internal and external documents, performance reports, annual reports, publications or websites, as specified below.
- Draft user friendly materials on the issues addressed in point 1 and on the structure and content of the Environmental Governance subprogramme, including background papers, internal briefing notes, power point presentations and fact sheets, to be used for outreach efforts as well as for inclusion in UNEP official documents and reports;
- Proactively seek contributions on the Environmental Governance subprogramme implementation from relevant staff, including through access to internal project management databases, and draft inputs reflecting such implementation for uploading into the website.
- Support the Environmental Governance subprogramme coordinator in reviewing projects and their relevant budgets, against quality criteria provided by the supervisor, as well as in keeping the subprogramme under review, for instance by conducting mapping exercises (for instance, mapping existing projects to UNEA resolutions or to outcomes of other intergovernmental bodies) within and across the subprogrammes.
- Participate in meetings related to the coordination and implementation of the Environmental Governance Subprogramme, including with project managers, regional coordinators and other UNEP offices.
- Support with other tasks as it may be required by the supervisor that are related to those above.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: be enrolled in:
- be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
- Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Studies in International relations or law/ programme management/ communication desirable.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
