Are you passionate about shelter issues? Do you have experience advancing advocacy initiatives in Africa? Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) may be looking for someone like you for the role of Advocacy Specialist to be based in its Pretoria, South Africa regional office.
As the Advocacy Specialist, you will work closely with staff in our national offices and at regional headquarters offices to support national advocacy initiatives by offering guidance, seeking expert advice as needed, collecting best practices and promoting successes.
You will travel up to 20%, mostly within the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, in order to meet with advocacy staff at our national organizations and with partner organizations, as needed.
Reporting to the Advocacy Manager, who is based in our regional office in Slovakia, the Advocacy Specialist will:
*Support the development of regional advocacy proposals as well as help monitor and generate learnings from existing ones.
*Support HFHI global advocacy initiatives (like the Global Advocacy Campaign on Land), and ensure policy compliance of national advocacy programs.
*Coordinate the Africa Advocacy Advisory Committee -- a small group of external contacts who can support and help guide regional-level advocacy initiatives. Convene meetings, develop the agenda, distribute minutes and decisions, etc.
*Identify funding opportunities for advocacy-related initiatives and research/maintain a database of housing ministry contacts for possible alliances.
*Participate in public forums and events that forward Habitat for Humanity’s advocacy agenda.
*Monitor regional news for housing-related issues that impact our work either positively or negatively, or that result in opportunities for creating low-cost housing within the region.
*Define research needs and coordinate research initiatives.
*Train national staff on advocacy.
*Liaise with relevant staff members in the Pretoria office. Update and educate staff in Pretoria on advocacy issues.

REQUIREMENTS:
*Bachelor's degree, preferably in development/housing/sociology/communications.
*3-5 years of experience working with and developing advocacy programs for non-profit organisations in Africa.
*Experience developing and maintaining partnerships; working knowledge of national and international government structures and multi-lateral institutions.
*Experience with planning and strategic decision-making.
*Coaching/consultancy/advisory experience.
*Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, including the ability to work effectively with remote teams.
*High proficiency in English required; Fluency in French strongly preferred.
*Computer literacy (MS office, accounting software systems).
*Travel: Must be willing and able to travel throughout the Europe, Middle East and Africa region up to 20% with occasional travel outside that region.
