Description – Management Couple for Eco-Lodge & Development Project
The Manda Wilderness Project is a pioneering initiative combining tourism and community development to assist one of Africa’s most remote and underprivileged areas. The project is driven by Nkwichi Lodge, a remote eco-lodge located in the Northwest corner of Mozambique, on the eastern side of Lake Malawi/Lake Nyassa, and the Manda Wilderness Community Trust (MWCT), a UK-registered charity, based at the lodge.
We are looking for a management couple to work together to run the activities of both Nkwichi Lodge and MWCT.
Skills/Requirements
These positions require self-motivated people in a secure relationship who are determined to drive the project forward, with passion. Whilst Nkwichi is in very beautiful surroundings, it is also a very remote and challenging environment, and thus we require people who have experience of living and working in remote locations in developing countries, and preferably in Africa.
Nkwichi Lodge is the economic driving force behind the project, and ensuring its smooth operation is fundamental aspect of the project. Guests who visit must be well looked after and as such all managers are expected to entertain and host in the evening, as well as to fill any position that the lodge may need help with. Sustainability is a key objective of the business however resources can be scarce and so an adaptive and realistic approach is necessary.
The Manda Wilderness Community Trust works with 16 partner villages on development projects that they themselves decide upon. Management of MWCT requires a in-depth knowledge of community development and its challenges and the ability to liaise with a variety of local stakeholders.
For both organizations, detailed financial reporting is essential and thus we require applicants to have a firm grasp of accounting and financial management.
Both organizations on occasion recruit consultants, advisers and volunteers and so the ability to manage and work with a diverse team is required.
MWCT and Nkwichi Lodge have extremely knowledgeable and loyal local staff. We require capable team leaders who are able to continue building the capacity of the staff and provide leadership and guidance. Depending on individual skills and interests, certain departments (such as Guest Management or the Agricultural Project) are allocated to each Manager as a mentor / trainer for the departments’ local Managers.
The management couple will be responsible to the Board of Directors for Nkwichi Lodge and the Board of Trustees for MWCT.
The successful applicants will be expected to commit for a minimum of 1 year, with the option of further extension.
The following skills are required:
previous lodge/hotel management experience;
previous community development experience;
experience of working in Africa or in remote locations in the developing world;
outstanding interpersonal and organisational skills;
proficiency in financial reporting;
familiarity with tourism marketing;
patience;
Portuguese desired but not necessary
Benefits
1,000/month salary
50/monthly bar allowance
1,000 annual international travel allowance, valid after 1st year of service
All accommodation and food costs covered
30 days annual leave, 50% of which valid after 6 months service
All work permits and visa will be covered only with completion of 1st year of service
The applicant will be responsible for providing their own adequate medical insurance, including emergency evacuation cover
This is a unique opportunity for a couple looking to expand their horizons and gain experience of working on an ambitious project in one of the world’s toughest, and most beautiful locations. Each day promises variation, and sometimes difficult challenges, however the potential rewards are endless.
