The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is a global research institute which works to empower women, advance gender equality, and fight poverty in the developing world. Overview:
The Technical Specialist will provide technical leadership and oversight to projects involving research, project implementation, technical assistance and policy advocacy across a range of sexual and reproductive health and rights issues. S/he will contribute to and lead conceptual and business development opportunities and contribute actively to the future direction of the Gender, Population and Development portfolio. Travel of at least 25% will be required.
Required Skills:
Education:
Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (i.e., Public Health, Sociology, Demography, International Development, Anthropology, Gender Studies, Human Rights) or Masters with commensurate experience.
Experience:
Minimum five (5) years of post-doctoral experience or ten (10) years of post-Masters experience conducting research and managing projects in developing countries, with demonstrated ability to translate research findings into policy and/or programming action. Broad knowledge of gender, sexual
and reproductive health and rights issues required, including proficiency with theory and concepts, ethical considerations and expertise in diverse research methodologies. Demonstrated leadership and mentoring experience are required to build capacity of junior researchers who are highly capable and self-directed. Skills:
- Proven experience in gender, sexual and reproductive health and rights in low and middle-income countries. Work with at-risk populations, such as adolescent girls, people living with HIV, commercial sex-workers and/or in conflict-affected settings is highly desirable.
- Extensive experience in the design and conduct of formative, operations and evaluation research in health and social sciences in coordination with multiple international and in-country partners.
- Extensive expertise with quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods data collection and analysis, to include expertise with one or more of the following analytical software packages: SPSS, STATA, ATLAS TI, NVivo, Nudist etc.
- Ability to effectively manage and juggle multiple projects, including staffing, workplans, deliverables, timelines and budgets.
- Experience in leadership of interdisciplinary research teams.
- Experience in providing training, capacity building and technical assistance for research and programming on gender and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- Demonstrated successful project management skills, along with maturity, diplomacy, and independence to work effectively with in-country partners, donors and project staff.
- Strong strategic sense for business development, committed to developing an innovative research and program base.
- Strong networking and negotiation skills in order to identify, cultivate and sustain viable relationships with donors and other partners as well as communicate knowledgeably about project concepts, progress and impact.
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to supervise and mentor other staff and consultants.
- Team player with proven ability to work collaboratively with professionals at different levels, including colleagues, partners and donor organizations.
- Proficiency in English and at least one other language required.Principal Responsibilities and Tasks:
Project Management and Technical Assistance: Serves as project director and provides technical assistance on relevant projects, overseeing and contributing to development and management of program design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, conceptualization and operationalization of indicators, supervision of project staff, liaising with ICRW support units and managing partner relationships.
Research: Designs and supervises, often in partnership with local and/or international teams, research plans and protocols.
Data Analysis: Develops literature reviews, analyzes primary and secondary data, drafts sharp and comprehensive syntheses based on data analysis, and writes high quality reports and other outputs.
Program Development and Dissemination: Develops areas of research and proposals focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights that complement and build on ongoing research efforts and contribute to achieving ICRW’s overall strategic objectives. Works closely with colleagues to conceptualize and design proposals and projects, as well as to disseminate findings. Identifies potential funding sources and actively cultivates potential opportunities.
Representation: Maintains professional expertise and recognition outside of ICRW through publishing and speaking in relevant forums. Authors articles and represents ICRW in the media and with colleague organizations; serves on coalitions and builds advocacy efforts in line with current research program.
