Intern - Programme Management (UNEP Convention on Migratory Species Office)

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a multilateral biodiversity-related treaty whose secretariat is administered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). CMS aims to comprehensively address the conservation and sustainable use of terrestrial, aquatic and avian migratory species and their habitats across their range.
The intern will be assisting with tasks related to the work of the Secretariat to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Dugongs and their Habitats throughout their Range (Dugong MoU), the Coordinating Unit for the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MoU) as well as other tasks as assigned.

The UNEP Convention on Migratory Species Office - Abu Dhabi internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the overall supervision of the Executive Coordinator (CMS Office - Abu Dhabi) and the direct supervision of the Associate Programme Officer, the intern may:
  • Draft and prepare various texts and documents
  • Assist in outreach activities and in communication to stakeholders
  • Assist in the organizing of workshops, meetings and other events
  • Design the layout for publications and the visual appearance of giveaways
  • Develop website content
  • Catalogue information
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Studies in conservation biology, environmental sciences, international relations, communications or international law preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental issues.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Arabic, French or Russian is desirable.
