Physician Assistant - Clinical Associate Mentor

Job Title: Physician Assistant to serve as Clinical Associate Mentor

The American International Health Alliance’s Volunteer Healthcare Corps (VHC) is recruiting experienced Physician Assistants to serve as Clinical Associate Mentors throughout South Africa. Mentors help equip Clinical Associates students with the essential knowledge and skills they need to provide quality healthcare services to the people of South Africa.

Launched in 2008 by the Department of Health, South African Clinical Associates are crucial mid-level professionals who are helping to meet the immediate health needs of their country, particularly in under-served rural areas. Currently, Clinical Associates are trained at three universities in South Africa, but the majority of their clinical training happens in district hospitals. Mentors are placed at one of the universities as well as at district hospitals to improve the didactic and clinical training of students.

Scope of Work:

• Assist in the teaching and training of Clinical Associate students
• Provide mentorship and tutoring to Clinical Associate students at district hospitals
• Assist university faculty with student assessment
• Work alongside local physicians and hospital staff to help reinforce the role of Clinical Associates and integrate them into the health system

Qualifications:

Required

• Physician Assistant with at least 5 years of primary care service delivery experience
• Eligible for licensure/registration in South Africa (as a volunteer)
• Flexible, energetic, and positive attitude
• 6 month to two year commitment

Preferred

• Experience in teaching and preceptorship, including providing feedback to students and bedside teaching in the clinic setting
• Can work independently with strong leadership skills
• Prior experience in low-resource settings
• Experience in providing training and hands-on support in a high case-load, primary care environment
• Knowledge of and familiarity with opportunistic infections and treatment
• Experience and/or knowledge of HIV/AIDS issues

Benefits: AIHA’s HIV/AIDS Twinning Center covers expenses for airfare, visa, work permits as well as provides a housing stipend, living allowance, medical evacuation insurance and in-country support.
