The Regional Protection Officer (Statelessness) will have primary responsibility for the
provision of technical advice and support to UNHCR regional offices, on statelessness issues
and the development of legal and operational strategies to address and prevent statelessness
situations. Support activities will include capacity building of the UNHCR staff in the region
on statelessness, analysis and technical advice on nationality laws, guidance on methods of
identification of stateless persons, and coordination and harmonization of national and
regional interventions.
In order to promote and implement solutions, the incumbent will be expected to establish
and/or cultivate relationships with international and national agencies, regional bodies and
national authorities. Contacts with national or local authorities will be undertaken in
coordination with and/or through the concerned UNHCR country offices.

Applicants will need to fulfill the following minimum requirements:
- Advanced university degree, at least a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution;
- At least 4 years of relevant work experience in the respective functional area of specialization or expertise according to the vacancy announcement;
- Excellent knowledge of English and at least one other UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish). Additional languages are an asset;
- Ability to work in a multicultural team;
- Willingness to serve in conflict zones, deep field locations;
- Willingness to rotate every few years.
Selected candidates will join the programme at levels P2, P3, P4, or P5, depending on their experience and academic achievement, on a cohort program, and will be assigned to their posts after having completed a comprehensive induction and orientation program in early 2015.
