A vacancy exists for the position of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Botswana
Requirements
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Dean shall (i) be appointed to serve both the UB and the Ministry of Health in respect of the joint staff agreement; (ii) participate in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the academic policies of the University; (iii) promote excellence in teaching, research, service and patient care programmes of the faculty; (iv) provide overall academic and administrative leadership to the Faculty by planning, directing, and coordinating the formulation and implementation of policies of the University to ensure sound educational leadership, educational planning and quality assurance, and educational collaboration and engagement; (v) play an advocacy role for the Faculty of Medicine; (vi) Promote and nurture a sound relationship between the Faculty and the Ministry of Health to ensure an enabling platform for quality clinical teaching, training and patient care; (vii) show deliberate and passionate commitment to developing opportunities, facilitating and implementing programs for capacity building; (viii) provide an enabling environment for research, teaching and patient care; (ix) arrange with the relevant health facility authorities for the provision of clinical services by the academic staff of the university.

By virtue of the office, the Dean shall (i) be a member of all the Boards and Committees in the Faculty; (ii) be a member of such committees of the Council and Senate as may be prescribed from time to time in the University statutes.
Qualifications and Experience:
The applicant must have (i) attained the rank of Professor at the time of application; (ii) an MBChB, MBBS, MD and a formal specialist qualification (such as MMEd, Fellowship or its equivalent in any speciality of medicine); (iii) a minimum of 10 years in the practice of his/her medical speciality in a recognized hospital/institution at the time of application, 5 of which must have been in an academic position; (iv) at least three years in a leadership position such as Dean; (v) a minimum of 24 peer reviewed publications.

Company profile
The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. The country’s first medical school was established in 2008 and had the first intake of students into the MBBS programme in August 2009. The MBBS programme is 5 years long after an initial one year in the Faculty of Science. The Faculty of Medicine has seen two sets of students graduating from its undergraduate programme. There are also a number of Master of Medicine (MMed) postgraduate programmes in some clinical specialties and more are being developed.
