ASSISTANT GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER – 12 MONTHS FIXED TERM CONTRACT

Job Summary
To provide an effective geotechnical engineering service to meet the operation’s production objectives through collection, validation, computerization and interpretation of geotechnical engineering data.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

• Degree in Geology/Engineering Geology or equivalent i.e. Diploma in Strata Control or Rock Mechanics
• 3 years post qualification experience
• Valid Botswana driver’s license
• Supervisory Development Programme or equivalent programme

Key Activities

• Recommends cost saving initiatives into budgets and controls expenditure within approved parameters.
• Collects, validates and analyses geotechnical data for use in the planning process through:
• Geological/geotechnical mapping
• Geological/geotechnical borehole logging
• Collection and preparation of laboratory test samples from borehole core and field samples
• Collection of water levels from both the pit dewatering system, wellfield and environmental monitoring boreholes.
• Collection and submission of water samples from environmental and wellfield boreholes for geochemical analyses
• Collection of field data from installed weather stations at the wellfield and within the mining lease.
• Hydrogeological & Geological logging from drilling chips or core collected from various drilling projects
• Geophysical borehole logging
• Seepage mapping in the pit.
• Hydrocensus data collection from existing and future water supply infrastructure
• Geophysical data collection for purposes of aiding groundwater exploration
• Coordinates the collection, validation and input of pit slope management data in appropriate databases and ensures that they meet the required/agreed standards.
• Communicates monitoring results to supervisor and relevant operational, planning and management stakeholders for hazard and information rectification through routine and special reports.
• Undertakes geotechnical projects in order to increase slope design confidence levels and rockfall/slope failure risk mitigations by:
• Analysing and identifying deficiencies in geotechnical model, using the outputs to plan data collection programs
• Quantifying geotechnical risks and conducting modeling/stability analysis
• Analysing slope failure/rockfall mitigations and communication
• Coordinating geotechnical projects to ensure achievement of objectives
• Manages manpower resources to achieve team objectives by:
• Setting objectives for subordinates, coaching and appraising them to ensure that the set targets are met
• Prioritizing and supervising the tasks performed by subordinates
• Reviewing performance of subordinates regularly
• Adheres to all Safety, Health, and Environmental policies and procedures in area of responsibility.
