Org. Setting and Reporting
 
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC\CEPAL) is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes supporting the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. The internship in the Human Resource Division will last 2-6 months, depending on the needs of the Division/Section. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an "as-needed" basis.
Interns are expected to work on a full-time basis (work five days per week; 35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Division/Section to which they are assigned, but they may undertake flexible working arrangements, subject to certain conditions.

The internship is UNPAID. All costs of travel and accommodation, including living expenses, must be covered by the intern or any relevant sponsoring institution.

The child or sibling of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above for a period of six months following the end of their internship.
 
Responsibilities
 
Under the general guidance of the Chief of the Human Resources Section and the direct supervision of the Human Resources Officers, the intern will assist in implementing various initiatives in collaboration with the Recruitment, Staff Administration and Training Units.

1) Recruitment
(a) Employer Branding
• Developing a strategy to recruit women into higher positions at ECLAC
• Research relevant literature

(b) Recruiting Interns
• Publishing vacancies at careers.org
• Administration of the Interns including onboarding
• Organizing Events like the “Intern Day”

(c) HR Homepage of CEPAL
• Updating the Homepage
• Developing the homepage further

2) Learning/Training Activities
(a) Provide support to Training Unit – Regular Language classes
• Install and check equipments for the classes;
• Verify the availability of rooms for every class;
• Provide assistance to teachers to prepare the material for language classes;
• Provide assistance in keeping record of the attendance of the regular language classes;
• Respond to queries by phone or e-mails to students as required;
• Assist Assistant with electronic data entry in IMIS and end of Month Summaries for the training classes.

(b) Provide support to Training Unit – Training courses in ECLAC and outside the premises
• Organize and deliver the material required for the courses;
• Set up the equipments in the rooms and install software as required;
• In the case of courses outside ECLAC, prepare the equipments and materials that must be carried to the place of the event;
• Set up the equipments and deliver materials for the courses;
• Keep information filed and updated available;
• During the absence of the Training Assistant schedule videoconference, request rooms for training and prepare the material necessary for the session.

(c) Provide Support during exam periods: Language final course exams/YPP (Young Professionals Programme)
• Check that the audio equipments work properly;
• Assist in the supervision of staff members/participants sitting the exams.

Education
 
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
- Be computer literate in standard software applications;
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
 
Work Experience
 
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
 
Languages
 
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Advanced knowledge of Spanish (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Intermediate knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
