CI Botswana is mainly responsible for the regional program on the Gaborone Declaration for Sustainability in Africa (GDSA) which was initiated in 2012 by the Government of Botswana (GoB) with significant input from CI. The core values of the declaration are of much importance to CI’s mandate of ensuring healthy sustainable societies. The primary job function for this position therefore to provide technical support to the GoB in its role as the interim secretariat to the GDSA as well as to provide operations support to the program office.
Reporting to the Government Liaison and Environment Policy Manager, this position is responsible for providing technical and administrative support in matters related to the GDSA. Technical support will be in the following areas: research related to the GDSA action statements in the following fields: natural capital accounting, sustainable production in agriculture, fisheries, extractive industries etc; gathering information required for development of funding proposals. Administrative support will be required in the following: procurement of office supplies and monitoring the use thereof; development and maintenance of office equipment/assets register; establishment of a filing system and maintenance of office files; Provide logistical, administrative and organizational support to workshops, conferences, etc.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support regional/country research efforts related to the following GDSA priority areas: natural capital accounting, sustainable production in agriculture, fisheries, extractive industries etc for social upliftment and poverty reduction in GDSA countries.
- Support regional/country fund raising efforts.
- Lead administrative functions which include expense reports, filing, travel booking, etc.
- Support preparatory work for GDSA meetings (workshops/conferences).
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Working Conditions
- Based in Gaborone
- Requires travel in southern and eastern Africa, as well as other regions – total travel up to 15%.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- A bachelor's degree or Masters in Environmental, Political or Social Sciences, with two years or more experience in environmental management or equivalent experience.
- Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
- Experience in the use of Microsoft Office and other common office software packages
- Fluency and excellent writing skills in English.
Preferred
- Ability to read and work in other languages of Gaborone Declaration signatories (French, Portuguese) is a distinct advantage.
- Experience in fundraising and the management of institutional partnership is an advantage
- The incumbent must have a clean driver’s license.
