KAVANGO ZAMBEZI TRANSFRONTIER CONSERVATION AREA TECHNICAL ADVISORS FOR LUENGUE-LUIANA AND MAVINGA NATIONAL PARKS, ANGOLA (TWO POSITIONS)
These are contractual positions of three (3) years’ duration with six (6) month probation period, and are tenable in Luenge-Luiana National Park and Mavinga National Park, Angola.
The main purpose of the positions is to: Support the Ministry of Environment with the development and effective management of the Luenge-Luiana and Mavinga National Parks.
Requirements
The key functions of the positions include among others: providing support to Ministry of Environment in the form of management inputs (infrastructure development, personnel management, capacity building and provision of essential field equipment); management processes (law enforcement, ecological monitoring, human-wildlife conflict mitigation and rural livelihoods development); and monitoring management outputs against the parks’ objectives. The Technical Advisors shall also assist the development of a long-term strategy for sustaining the coexistence of the people settled in the parks and wildlife, vis-à-vis sustainable utilization of natural resources by the communities, mitigation of human wildlife conflicts, co- option of local communities as functional partners in the management of the National Parks, and provision of technical, and administrative support to the parks’ management teams, in their effort to develop the two parks to internationally recognized standards, and effectively manage them to sustain biodiversity and ecotourism development.
Requirements: a diploma or degree in natural resources management / wildlife management, protected areas management, or any related discipline; 10-years’ work experience in protected area management in the sub-Saharan Africa region, focusing on conservation and development, including tourism and should have experience in building relations with diverse stakeholders, and must have demonstrable achievements in this regard; a good understanding of the government systems in Angola, including existing and emerging paradigms in the environmental sector, especially the trans-frontier conservation area (TFCA) concept and conservation centred development; demonstrable experience in conservation and rural development; fluency in spoken and written Portuguese and English; computer literacy; valid SADC driver’s licence; and a willingness to live and travel in remote areas and under harsh conditions.
