Economics Desk Officer

Overall Job Purpose
The Economist will provide direct economics and strategic research support for Barclays Bank Botswana functions, covering both macroeconomic market research (commentary and in-depth analysis of financial markets economies for internal views on macro environment), as well as providing macroeconomic backdrop and input into the bank’s budgeting, risk management, market access and product development teams and the banks’ various committees. The successful candidate will require a deep understanding of the global and domestic banking regulatory environment and will have to keep track of developments.

Requirements

Main Responsibilities

• Analyse and interpret a combination of domestic and global macro fundamentals
• Produce high quality and insightful research for wide dissemination to institutional clients, Central Banks, media and general public
• Have a deep understanding of the Botswana economy and also a research interest in global events and act as liaison for all macroeconomic updates for the bank
• Conduct macroeconomic research and provide forecasts for business strategy
• Provide the house economic view to Barclays Bank Botswana senior committees and to Treasury Trading teams to aid position taking for own account
• Keep track of international developments and update management
• Interact with Banking and Financial Sector Regulators’ and participate and provide inputs for banking Industry bodies
• Specific responsibility for Strategic Planning and Analysis of Specific Projects
• Present at customer events, and engage external counterparts at senior levels on macroeconomics
• Develop and maintain excellent relationships with Country MDs and their support teams to ensure achievement of business goals
• Accountable to provide reports required by Barclays Africa Regional office and the Regulator.

Experience and Qualifications

• Degree/ Honours Degree in Economics
• Post graduate qualification from a well-respected tertiary institution
• 8 - 10 years or more experience as an economist

Knowledge & Skills:

• Knowledge of macro economics
• Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
• Time management
• Cost and budget control
• Applied time series econometrics
• Experience in research within a reputable policy development or financial institution will be very useful.
• Personal / Interpersonal skills
