The mandate of Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) is to grow the value of Rio Tinto by discovering or acquiring resources that can increase future cash-flows. The objective in RTX is to discover on average, one Tier 1 resource each year. This is achieved through the effective application of Geoscience techniques and processes whilst taking into account HSEC, economic, commercial and political factors.
Exploration and discovery have been the driving force behind our business for nearly 150 years. We are building a strong technical team in Botswana to undertake the safe prospecting and evaluation of the technical and economic viability of a potential iron ore development.
We have an exciting opportunity to join this dynamic and highly successful exploration team as a HSEC Officer based in Botswana.
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Reporting to the Senior Advisor HSEC, as the HSEC Officer, you will assist the exploration project teams, field and operational staff to understand and meet HSEC standards, including undertaking day to day risk management activities, complying with HSEC standards, and improving HSEC performance on the ground.
JOB OBJECTIVES
• Provide HSEC assistance and advice to project teams and operational employees by advising on HSEC management system requirements and Rio Tinto standards and integrating these into the planning and execution of exploration activities
• Monitoring and auditing the compliance of project and operational activities to identify non-compliances and/or improvement opportunities
• Providing guidance, advice and coaching to project teams and operational employees in understanding and applying HSEC standards and practices
• Implementing monitoring programs, evaluating data, and initiating appropriate responses in line with corporate and statutory standards and corporate reporting requirements
• Assist operational sites and offices to achieve HSEC compliance and assurance by conducting HSEC compliance audits (systems and standards)
• Compiling and reporting on HSEC results in accordance with Group requirements
• Maintaining certification of Environmental Management systems in compliance with ISO 14001
• Ensuring external service providers and contractors are informed and equipped to meet HSEC requirements and standards
• Organise medical evaluations and organise and monitor return to work plans to support the case management of injured or sick employees. Liaise with project managers and supervisors to provide assistance and advice regarding the case management of individual employees
• Provide general support to HSEC staff involved in planning and delivering training to project teams and field staff
• Plan and conduct work in accordance with HSEC and compliance policies by setting and monitoring objectives to ensure standards are met, and anticipating and managing risks
• Contribute to improving HSEC culture and performance by continuously improving operational work practices, and by modelling right-behaviours to achieve an interdependent safety culture
• Participate in HSEC networks and forums to share information and best practices, to align priorities, activities and resources, and to collaborate on and contribute to solving common problems
• Undertake community liaison, mapping and engagement in support of RTX operations, under the direction of the regional Senior Advisor Communities.”

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Post school qualification in Safety
• Minimum 3 years relevant experience
• Advanced proficiency in SAP and MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint
• Demonstrated interest in working within a field based exploration environment.
• An appreciation of the HSEC issues and requirements associated with resources and mineral exploration activities
• Training in health, safety, environment, community, and/or social performance is highly desirable
• Very good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare and present technical information tailored to the needs of different audiences
• Valid driver’s license
• The ability to plan, prioritise and deliver work to achieve desired outcomes and timeframes.
• Strong commitment to workplace safety
• Minimum 3 years relevant experience
