The mandate of Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) is to grow the value of Rio Tinto by discovering or acquiring resources that can increase future cash-flows. The objective in RTX is to discover on average, one Tier 1 resource each year. This is achieved through the effective application of Geoscience techniques and processes whilst taking into account HSEC, economic, commercial and political factors.
Exploration and discovery have been the driving force behind our business for nearly 150 years. We are building a strong technical team in Botswana to undertake the safe prospecting and evaluation of the technical and economic viability of a potential iron ore development.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Reporting to the Senior Project Geoscientist, as the Project Geoscientist, you will be responsible to advance the projects with good potential across any stage of the project lifecycle to proceed as efficiently and rapidly as possible, as well as implementing Rio Tinto's policies on safety, environment, community relations and business integrity within the areas of project responsibility.

JOB OBJECTIVES
• Lead a project or an element of a larger/complex exploration project in a region
• Progress a project through the pipeline towards discovery by using technical knowledge, data, innovative thinking and collaboration
• Provide technical support to specific components of project work that may include early stage generative through to order of magnitude and handover to product group
• Supervise contractors and service providers through the tender process, content of the contract, and monitoring the contract deliverables in accordance with RT standards
• Plan and conduct work in accordance with all HSEC and compliance policies by setting and monitoring objectives to ensure standards are met, and anticipating and managing risk
• Manage exploration data and documents throughout the discovery pipeline ensuring the most updated and complete version is stored in accessible and secure databases and information systems
• Undertake reporting on project activities, progress, issues and outcomes
• Collaborate with and establish a network of peers working on other projects to share information, specialist knowledge, resources, materials and best practices across the region
• Continuously improve the technical aspects of project delivery by analysing performance information, and making recommendations for improvement taking account of advances in technologies
• Provide first line supervision for project team staff such as graduate geologists, geotechnical officers, field support staff and contractors. Take responsibility for own and nominated staff performance in line with RT principles of Collaboration and Living the Values
• Coach less experienced staff in the logistical and technical aspects of the project
• Undertake liaison with local stakeholders and community members to develop and foster effective relationships to support projects at the local level
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Tertiary degree in geology or related field
• Minimum 4 years relevant experience with iron ore exploration
• Significant experience as a geologist and in supervision of fieldwork, in particular drilling programs
• Knowledge of mineral deposits and exploration techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to guide and coach project staff and manage contractors.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with peers to achieve outcomes through the sharing of expertise, skills and technical capability.
• Proficient in English; Sound communication and advisory skills including the ability to prepare and present project recommendations and reports to management.
• Understanding of and commitment to health, safety and environmental sustainability practices within the workplace
• Able to manage highly confidential and commercially sensitive information
• Must be able to manage multiple tasks effectively
• Proficient in ARC GIS, Target, SAP and MS Office suite
• Tertiary degree in geology or related field
