Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP Regional Office for Africa (ROA), internship is for 6 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the regional Climate Change Programme Coordinator in UNEP/ROA,
The intern will work with UNEP-ROAs Climate Change Team. The position will be linked to the following streams of team's work and have a heavy focus on information technology management, in particular hosting and supplying information for www.AAKNet.org.
The intern will be responsible for:
Ecosystems based Adaptation (EbA), including support on advancing EbA for Food Security
Coastal Ecosystems based Adaptation in Small Island Developing States
Research relating to prominent climate change adaptation issues among developing countries, including formulation data and information to contribute towards global research and scientific knowledge on CCA and EbA.
The position may also include:
Preparation of briefings, articles and reports on the above mentioned subject areas
Carry out background research including data collection and analysis
Assist with the overall implementation with all research elements of the work streams
Prepare communication material and prepare outreach activities
Assist with the organization of workshops and conferences.
The intern will be responsible for:
Providing technical, design and development of website database
Developing/furthering modern, interactive and easily navigable website displays, simple in design, yet attractive; please note that websites may cover countries with little access to high speed/broadband internet
Website data management for Ecosystems based Adaptation and Coastal Ecosystems based Adaptation in Africa
Managing social media as needed
Formulation data and information and synthesizing this information into useable toolkits for the Africa Adaptation Knowledge Network (www.AAKNet.org).

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
be enrolled in:
a. be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Final year undergraduate or masters studies in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, International Affairs, Climate Change, Economics, or related study. Interest and willingness to learn more about subject area (Climate Change and Ecosystem Management in Africa) a must.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
