Duties and Resposibilities
1. Provide technical support and assistance to membership with grievances or in dispute with their employers, to ensure that such grievances or disputes are settled speedily in the interests of members.
2. Responds to requests for assistance and analyses cases.
3. Assists members to respond to charges or raise grievances by providing the necessary technical knowledge to prepare documents and evidence.
4. Represent members in cases and argues merits of cases.
5. Follows up cases to ensure compliance with procedures and writes to employers to point out failure to comply with agreements, procedures and terms and conditions of employment.
6. Liaises closely with Legal Officer on legal issues and advices members of their rights.
7. Monitors implementation of terms and conditions of employment to ensure compliance with procedures and the equitable treatment of members.
8. Liaises with other Unions in IR issues which cut cross the public sector to ensure a coordinated approach.
9. Promote avail feedback to the aggrieved about the status of their grievances.
10. Put into place a process for members to report grievances and disputes and support systems at branch level to ensure members have access to professional assistance.
11. Take minutes for grievance meetings and dispute resolution hearings
12. Propose meetings for grievances that require facilitation/conciliation.
13. Prepares legal options for cases that need to be pursued through courts and briefs Attorneys accordingly.
14. Proactively monitor operation of the case management system and ensure appropriate intervention by users and update the database as and when new development occurs.
Undertakes such other related duties as directed by supervisor.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Degree in Human Resource Management or Industrial Relations or related area.
- At Least two (2) years' experience as an HR or Industrial Relations officer with a thorough understanding of Botswana labours laws and practices particularly in relation to public sector workers.
