VACANCY: SENIOR MAGISTRATE (1 POST)
The Judicial Service Commission invites suitably qualified citizens to apply for one (1) post of Senior Magistrate in the Administration of Justice tenable in Nata.

SALARY SCALE: D1 (P 251 376 –P277 524) per annum

QUALIFICATIONS:
LLB degree from University of Botswana (or other recognized University or Institution).
EXPERIENCE:
2 years’ experience as Magistrate I or six years post qualification relevant experience.
BENEFITS:
a) Optional contributory medical aid scheme Government pays 50% and employee pays 50%).
b) Contributory pension fund scheme Government pays 15% and employee pays 5%.
c) 30% scarce skills allowance, which is subject to review from time to time.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
a) To hear, determine and deliver judgments on both criminal and civil cases registered within his/her jurisdiction except those prescribed to be heard by the High Court e.g. treason and murder and attempt to commit them.
b) To deal with cases involving children in need of care and maintenance of children in affiliation cases.
c) To conduct inquest in instances where death of any person has occurred in a manner other than from natural causes.
d) As a magistrate in charge of small size stations takes responsibility for the appraisal/Performance Review and management of all staff and related issues including implementation of the Performance Management System (PMS) but not limited to mission, values and the production of Annual Performance Plans.
e) To undertake any additional duties assigned by the Chief Justice, Registrar and Master, Regional Magistrate and/or Chief Magistrate, including heading of small stations and dealing with all functions related thereto.
f) Proficiency in the application of Judicial Case Management (JCM) and Court Records Management System (CRMS).

SENTENCING POWERS:
(i) Up to 10 years imprisonment or P 20 000.00 fine or both.
(ii) Can order 9 strokes corporal punishment on criminal cases.
(iii) Has civil jurisdiction in all civil claims where the total amount claimed does not exceed P 20 000.00.
