Duties and Resposibilities
Core responsibilities
- Coordinate, lead and manage BOPEU communication and public relations strategy and functions.
- Be the media contact and liaison officer and generally build and maintain rapport and good, effective working relations with media personnel, editors, reporters and freelancers.
- Lead and supervise a communications team.
- Be responsible for safe custody and use of communications material and equipment.
- Produce, publish and manage Union media, publicity and publications including: advertising, brand and identity, newsletters, magazines, brochures, flyers, leaflets, pamphlets and other promotional literature, websites social media and group email communication (intranet).
- Manage written correspondence and internal communications/memos, between offices and ensure effective information dissemination to members and union structures.
- Manage CSR projects and events, including commemoration of special events.
- Advice Union leadership regarding image, protocol and etiquette.
- To facilitate and support role of Union Spokespersons including Press Releases, and draft speeches, talking points and briefs for Union Executives.
- Lead editing, compilation and packaging of the Union's annual reports.
- Organise and arrange media briefings conferences, public discussions and related educational informative forums.
- Facilitate/Coordinate and storage of newspaper clips, videos, media monitoring and media records.Â
- Be responsible for publicity budget and transactions.Â
Non-Core Duties
- Contribute to improvement and management of front desk functions, customer relations and Union employee (staff) relations
- Advise and coordinate rapporteuring functions at conferences.
- In consultation with investment wing, advise and manage the strategic use of Union brand material, souvenirs, corporate gifts and merchandise.
- Support the Union's Education, Organising (outreach) and Industrial Relations functions.
- Contribute to external visits, receiving visitors and trade union solidarity.
- Advice and support development of fundraising proposals (grant writing)Â
Qualifications and Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Media Studies or Journalism, plus a minimum of five (5) years in a Communications or Public Relations environment, with proven practical application of the required skills and competencies. Alternatively, a Master's Degree in the above discipline with three (3) years relevant work experience, Membership to a professional Communications and/or Public Relations body will be an added advantage.
Competencies
- Outstanding writing and oral communications skills, including presentations and public speaking.
- Strong PR acumen, attention to detail and high degree of creativity, personal organisation, planning, and time management, and willingness to work odd hours.
- Significant media relationships (connections).
- Excellent inter-personal and people relations skills in local and national cultural context.
- Political savvy in current Trade Union context and environment.
- Operational knowledge and practice in the organisational structure, values, and culture, specifically of BOPEU and of Trade Unions in general.
- Strong project management and marketing skills, (including events, protocol and etiquette).
- Very good ICT and media production skills including: radio, TV, copy-editing, use of applicable software, graphics, desktop publishing and management of websites and social media.
- Basic understanding of applicable laws e.g. libel.
- Budget management and basic fundraising skills for non-profit organisations.
- Good coordination/supervisory, team work, relationship management and basic strategic skills.
