JUNIOR EARTH OBSERVATION THEMATIC EXPERT

MESA | MONITORING FOR ENVIRONMENT AND SECURITY IN AFRICA (SADCTHEMA)

Monitoring Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) programme is recruiting fixed term local positions for its dynamic SADC Region Project Office based at Botswana Department of Meteorological Services in Gaborone, Botswana. 

1.JUNIOR EARTH OBSERVATION THEMATIC EXPERT 

Reference: PF5/2014

1.1.Job Purpose 

The Junior Thematic Officer is responsible for assisting with development and use of Earth observation (EO) based products and services, which will benefit agriculture and environmental decision-making and management in the SADC region. This includes liaison with and support to MESA stakeholders on product development and use, scientific input into the development of services and products, testing, validation and quality control of MESA services and products, training in the production and use of these products and
promotion of MESA services and products.

1.2.Qualifications & Experience

•BSc in Agriculture/Environmental sciences/Forestry/Water Management, Meteorology or relevant discipline with specialization in remote sensing. MSc is and added advantage
•At least 3 years post qualification experience in the use of earth observation for agricultural and/or environmental, monitoring

1.3.Specific Professional Experience

1.3.1.Minimum

•At least 3 years experience in using GIS tools/Remote Sensing and image processing technology;
•Demonstrated computer proficiency and systems management under Linux and Unix with in depth
knowledge of open source GIS packages like ILWIS and QGIS;
•Computer proficiency with high level of familiarity with commonly used packages like MS Word, Excel, and Power Point and Open-Office tools;
•Demonstrated experience in Agriculture and Environmental Resource management with a geographical focus in Southern Africa;
•Proven report writing capability

1.3.2.Desirable

•Experience of development of training materials and capacity building;
•Experience of working in an international environment and as part of a team.

1.3.3.Languages

•Fluent in spoken and written English
•Knowledge of other official SADC languages (Portuguese and French) is an advantage
