Salary Scale: D1: P251, 376 – P277, 524.
Leave: 30 working days per annum

Qualifications:
• BSc Degree in Geology, MSc. Geoscience.
Experience:
• A minimum of 12 years post graduate practical experience in regional geological mapping and at least two years in D2 salary scale.
Job Summary:
• Responsible for the national primary field geological mapping and delineation of potential Earth Resources.
Key Competencies:
• Extensive knowledge in Regional Geology of Southern Africa.
• Leadership and management skills.

• High standards of oral and written communication, including scientific presentations.

Duties:
• Manages the Regional Geology division of the department.
• Formulates and proposes projects to examine, evaluate and disseminate pertinent geological information.
• Prepares plans for the department’s regional geological mapping programmes.
• Supervises field mapping projects.
• Trains newly recruited geologists on various techniques of mapping and report writing.
• Edits geological maps and manuscripts for publications.
• Provides regional geology advice to various stakeholders.

Salary Scale: D2 (D2 P218, 592. – P241, 344 per annum)

Experience: At least 10 years’ experience in the geological/geophysical exploration projects or related field as an earthquake seismologist/ Geophysicist Management and at least two years at D3 scale.
Job Summary:
• Monitors seismic activity using data from Botswana Seismological Network (BNS) stations as well as regional and global networks.
• Maintains BSN network of stations. The incumbent will also be occasionally required to execute seismological surveys for geotechnical purposes.
• Monitors processing of geophysical data.
• Prepares project proposal for geophysical projects.
• Coordinates execution of geophysical exploration projects.
Duties:
• Analyses and interprets digital seismographs (including infrasound traces) recorded from earthquakes and other seismic disturbances.
• Makes determinations regarding location, times or arriving phrases, and locations and magnitudes of events install, calibrate, operate and maintain seismic instrumentation.
• Analyses earthquake source mechanisms monitors, compiles, retrieves and archives seismic data.
• Designs, plans and execute seismological surveys for geotechnical and environmental purposes.
• Ensures data quality and completeness through established procedures
• Maintains a database that describes installed seismic instrumentation, station locations and various data recording parameters.
• Creates reports to document procedures, methodologies, software and other aspects of the monitoring system.
• Prepares budget for the division.

Job summary:
• To undertake engineering geological/geotechnical and environmental geology mapping of areas in Botswana (designated development regions, towns and villages) and produce maps and publications of international standards describing the geotechnical aspects of soils, intact rocks and rock masses, and environmental geology processes that may constrain the development of human settlement such as floods, groundwater problems and pollution, and land stability.
Duties:
• Engages in the assessment of Geotechnical and Environmental Geological constraints that may hinder development of human settlements or any other developments projects. Investigate and determine the impacts of proposed human settlement or other developmental projects on the geological environment and suggest appropriate mitigation measures for design and planning decision support.
• Makes geotechnical tender documents and research project proposals outlining objectives, timing, manpower, financial and human resources requirements.
• Conducts regional and site specific field geotechnical investigations generating data, analyzing and interpreting results and disseminating recommendations on the land development suitability constraints as thematic maps and technical reports
• Provides technical input into stakeholder projects and reference group committees.
• Responds to public requests with regards to environmental geological matters
• Trains and guides junior staff on environmental (geotechnical) geology concepts.
• Advices the public and Director on issues related to environmental/ engineering/geotechnical geology.

10. Updates the geological database and availability of Geological data.
11. Conducts staff performance reviews with junior staff.
12. Provides on job training for supervisees.
13. Inducts newly recruited officers.
14. Attends workshops and seminars relevant to the job and undertakes any other related duties as may be assigned by Management.
