Call for Consultants – Youth and Livelihoods Proposal Technical Writers
Sector: Livelihoods
Location: Global
Employee Type: Consultant
Employee Category: Not Applicable
Description
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, we restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home.
IRC's Child and Youth Protection and Development (CYPD) technical unit is updating its proposal development consultant roster and is seeking individuals interested in acting as Technical Writer on competitive proposals for donor funding opportunities – primarily USAID, U.S. Department of Labor, DFID, UN agencies, and private sector foundations (e.g. MasterCard, Nike, etc). Individuals should be able to demonstrate experience supporting proposal development processes within post-crisis and less developed country contexts. Experience designing programs and writing proposals for youth and/or livelihoods programming is required, particularly proposals involving youth micro-enterprise development, microfranchising, career centers/business hub, job placements, apprenticeships/technical and vocational training. Experience working on proposals for related youth programming, adolescent development, and youth well-being and resiliency is favorable.
Technical Writers must be able to travel and be comfortable working several weeks in less developed and post-crisis settings. Technical Writers must work with IRC staff both in-country and remotely to articulate and produce high quality, competitive proposals responsive to donor requirements; become rapidly familiar with the current sector landscape; collaborate on program design strategy sessions, including determination of theories of change; research and analyze topics pertinent to the program; effectively demonstrate the use and application of existing internal/external evidence in program design and proposal narrative; assess partner technical capacity and prospective roles; liaise with cost proposal managers to ensure coherence between narrative and budget elements; as well as lead and coordinate other proposal writing activities, as required.
An Ideal consultant will have:
- A Master's degree in education, economic development, economics, social work or another related social sciences field (international affairs, etc.);
- 5 years related work experience, at least 3 years of field experience;
- High-level skills using Microsoft Office software, particularly Word and Excel;
- Ability to analyze and synthesize a variety of material in a fast-paced environment;
- Extensive experience with program design, including log frames and budgeting;
- Experience negotiating agreements with local and international partners, private sector actors, and financial service providers;
- A demonstrated track record developing winning proposals;
- Proposal writing samples; and
- Fluency in English. Working proficiency in another language, especially French and/or Arabic, will be viewed favorably.
